Dark to speak at exclusive HD event

Randall P. Dark has been tapped to be a keynote speaker the 6th Annual High Definition Summit, July 16 & 17 in Hollywood, CA. Dark will be speaking at the dinner on the 16th, and will address the development of high definition over the span of his career, and give tips and insights on how better to produce and shoot in HD. He'll also discuss some of the challenges content creators run up against and solutions he's developed to address them.

Additional keynote speakers include Randy Freer (President, FOX Sports Network,) Edward Lammi (EVP, TV Production, Sony Pictures Television,) and Melinda Witmer (EVP & CPO, Time-Warner Cable.)

The High Definition Summit is hosted by Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News and Broadcast Engineering magazines. It is a networking event designed to explore key issues - with detailed case studies, high-level keynotes and in-depth analysis.

The private summit will focus on the latest developments, efficiencies and opportunities in origination, production/post production and distribution of high definition programming, and what's ahead for this exciting, expanding business.

2008 ATSC Annual Meeting Looks to Future of Digital Broadcasting

Paving the way for next-generation digital television (DTV) standards, the Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc. celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the 2008 ATSC Annual Meeting today.

Morning and afternoon panels featured industry experts on a range of topics of keen interest to digital television stakeholders -- lively discussions commemorating the ATSC's Silver Anniversary, the organization's groundbreaking work over the years, and the ongoing activities focused on the future of DTV.

Randall Dark was a featured industry expert on "HDTV, We've Come a Long Way," addressing HDTV's major progress since the 1980s. Peter Fannon, Panasonic Vice President and former head of the Advanced Television Test Center, chaired the panel.

The first ATSC meeting was held on May 13, 1983, at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) headquarters in Washington, DC. The ATSC was formed by the Joint Committee of Intersociety Coordination (JCIC). The JCIC was composed of the NAB, the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA), the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE). Today, the ATSC is made up of approximately 165 member organizations from all segments of the television industry.

ATSC commemorates 25 years

In May, the ATSC’s quarter-century of standards leadership will be formally celebrated at the ATSC Annual Meeting. Scheduled for May 8 at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City in Arlington, Va., the event will feature Randall Dark on a panel of industry experts for the morning session "HDTV, We've Come a Long Way." The discussion will be moderated by Panasonic's Peter Fannon.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards for digital television. The ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite and semiconductor industries.

Dark Becomes Shining Light for Make-A-Wish Foundation

Maxell Corp. of America has recognized Randall Dark, CEO of Randall Dark Productions, for his work on the comedy feature Closing Escrow which was lensed entirely on Maxell HDCAM. Maxell awarded Dark, who's considered an HD pioneer, with a glass trophy featuring the Maxell "Blow Away" icon, unlimited Maxell HD product for use on his next project, and $5,000 to donate to a charity of his choice. Dark, who recently relocated from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas, designated the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas to receive the $5,000 gift.

Dark to judge inaugural Greenlight Awards at SXSW

The search to discover the Best Original Digital TV Series is in motion. SXSW along with ON Networks(www.onnetworks.com) is recognizing this new category by introducing The Greenlight AwardsTM.

The Greenlight Awards will honor the Best Original Digital Production and the Best Original Series Idea with prizes of up to $10,000. Finalists will be reviewed by a panel of prominent industry and new media judges including actor Luke Wilson, indie writer/director Richard Linklater, HD pioneer Randall Dark, TV Week’s Daisy Whitney and founder of Smashface Productions Zadi Diaz.

Winning content will be celebrated at an exclusive event held during SXSW. Submissions are free and must be received by February 15, 2008.
